Sonoma Square Itinerary: A Local’s Guide to the Perfect Day

by | Feb 6, 2025 | RECIPES

Day 2 of exploring Sonoma is centered around the historic Sonoma Square—one of the last standing town squares that continues to be a vibrant, community-focused hub. This Sonoma Square itinerary is the perfect way to experience the area like a local. It’s a place to unwind with a picnic and a bottle of bubbly (yes, you can legally drink outside here!). The square frequently hosts concerts, events, and markets, and during the summer months, the Tuesday Night Farmers Market (4-8 PM) draws locals with fresh produce and food trucks. Bring a blanket, settle in, and soak up the atmosphere.

This Sonoma Square itinerary is designed to feel like a local’s experience—a day to leisurely explore, enjoy great food, and enjoy the town’s charm without rushing from winery to winery. You can easily add wine tasting around the square on another day, but today is about savoring Sonoma as a chef and as a local.

Morning: Coffee and Pastries

Start your day with a delicious pastry and coffee from Basque Boulangerie, or if you’re a coffee purist, grab a cup from Ohm Coffee Roasters to fuel your morning.

If you’re in the mood for a full brunch, head to Sunflower Café—the food is good, but the real star is their beautiful patio.

Mid-Morning: Art, Cheese, and Strolling

After brunch, take a short walk to the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, a charming, intimate museum that takes about 30 minutes to an hour to explore.

Then, take a leisurely stroll around the square, stopping at charming boutiques, clothing stores, and the independent bookstore. Wildflower and the vintage store are personal favorites.

Make a pit stop at Sonoma Cheese Factory, a beloved spot with an excellent selection of cheeses from around the world. Grab a wedge or two for an afternoon picnic in the square—this is a must for any Sonoma Square itinerary.

Lunch: Choose Your Flavor

Feeling hungry? You’ve got options:

  • Delhi Belly for flavorful Indian cuisine.
  • Maya for fresh and delicious Mexican food.
  • Red Grape for a casual yet satisfying pizza experience with a lovely outdoor patio.

Afternoon: Relax and Sip

After lunch, grab your blanket and take a well-deserved nap or just lounge in the square, people-watching and enjoying the laid-back energy.

Mid-afternoon, pop into Sigh., Sonoma’s stylish champagne bar for a glass of bubbly in a chic setting. A stop at Sigh is a fantastic way to add a touch of elegance to your Sonoma Square itinerary.

If you prefer a more relaxed, locals’ vibe, grab an outdoor table on the front patio at the historic Swiss Hotel, where you can sip wine and take in the Sonoma charm.

Dinner: A Memorable Meal

If this is the night you’ve hired a private chef for your dinner, head home now! Otherwise, for a great dinner, here are three standout choices:

  • Valley – Featuring natural wines and the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. The menu may be simple, but each dish is thoughtfully crafted and chef-approved.
  • Café La Haye – A cozy, well-loved spot with a refined but unpretentious menu.
  • La Salette – A Portuguese gem offering flavorful small plates perfect for sharing.

Another option is Girl and The Fig, which serves delicious food and is consistently well-rated.

End your day feeling full, relaxed, and totally immersed in the magic of Sonoma.

Whether it’s the charming shops, great food, or relaxing atmosphere, this Sonoma Square itinerary offers the perfect way to experience the heart of the town like a local.

Stay tuned for Day 3, where I’ll take you on another exciting adventure!
