f you’ve been following this series on exploring Sonoma, know that it brings me so much joy to create these itineraries of the “perfect day” in Sonoma. For years, I’ve explored every nook and cranny of both Sonoma and Napa, curating recommendations that make sense for visitors who want a truly special experience. Here are my suggestions for the two best restaurants in Sonoma for a casual yet excellent food experience.
Day 3: Where to Eat Like a Local
As a chef, I often get asked: Where should we eat when we visit Sonoma?
Most people asking this question are booking a private dinner with us, and since that’s usually just one night of their trip, I love offering my favorite places to eat for the rest of their stay.
In my last two blog posts, I covered perfect days in Sonoma, but today is all about food. These are my top two places to eat in the town of Sonoma, focused on where locals go—places that serve world-class food that’s simple, made with love, and bursting with talent. If you’re looking for the best restaurants in Sonoma, these should be at the top of your list.
El Molino Central
Located just outside the town square on Highway 12, El Molino Central serves some of the best Mexican food in Sonoma. Enchiladas, tacos, and nachos here are all superb—high quality, authentic, and made with care.
If you’re lucky enough to visit when they’re serving Chiles en Nogada, prepare for a treat. A poblano pepper stuffed with pork, covered in a creamy walnut sauce and topped with pomegranate seeds, this dish is unlike any other Mexican food you’ve had—it’s one of my all-time favorite dishes.
The al pastor tacos are another standout, with their perfect balance of spice, pineapple sweetness, and sheer perfection. This spot is a must-visit for anyone searching for the best restaurants in Sonoma.
Spread Kitchen
Just down the road from El Molino, you’ll find Spread Kitchen, a Lebanese-inspired gem that consistently maintains a 5-star rating. Chef Cristina creates fresh, healthy dishes and packed with flavor.
My personal go-to is the shawarma beef bowl with extra sauce. But whether you order the pitas, salads, or dips, everything is excellent and deeply satisfying. There is nothing on the menu that’s not delightful and made with an incredible amount of care and love.
If you’re looking for the best places to eat in Sonoma, this is a spot you can’t miss. You can grab takeout for a picnic in the square, enjoy it on their patio, or even have it delivered to your vacation rental for a delicious meal enjoyed in the comfort of your stay.
Bonus: A Bit of Nature & Wine
If you’re in this part of town, I highly recommend a stop at the Sonoma Valley Regional Park for a picturesque, calming hike.
Jack London Historic Park is also in the area if you’re up for something a little more immersive. It’s a bit more involved than the regional park but well worth the visit for its beauty and history.
And, of course, Benziger Winery is nearby. Their wines are fantastic, but what sets them apart is their deep commitment to the land and sustainable farming practices. A stop here is a wonderful addition to your Sonoma food and wine itinerary.
There are plenty of other wineries along Highway 12, many of which I have yet to explore myself—so take your time, follow your curiosity, and enjoy the adventure!
Whether you’re a foodie looking for the best restaurants in Sonoma, a wine lover seeking great tastings, or simply searching for a relaxing day, this itinerary is the perfect way to experience the area like a local. Stay tuned for more Sonoma dining recommendations, and as always, happy eating!
